New Pershore Aldi store should be ‘boost for economy’ - MP

SUPPORT for Pershore Market’s long-serving traders was on the shopping list of West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin as she offered her support for the development of a £5million Aldi in the heart of the town.

Mrs Baldwin was briefed on the plans which, if approved by Wychavon planning chiefs, will see ‘bespoke food store carefully designed to respect the surrounding area’ built on the vast 2.33 acre site.

Among the plans which have now been submitted to Wychavon District Council is a 116 space car park with seven parent and child spaces, five blue badge bays and four EV charging points.

The existing market will remain open for the remainder of 2023 and Aldi hope the new store, which will take up a large swathe of the site will create 40 jobs.

Mrs Baldwin walked around the market with representatives from the company to hear plans for the relocation of the popular businesses based there. It’s expected district councillors will have their say on the plans early next year.

Many of the current stall holders already have plans for a new location and Pershore’s MP was briefed on plans to work with the district and town councils to encourage more people to visit both the store and the high street.

“Pershore is already a wonderful place to shop with lots of independent retailers,” she said.

“Bearing in mind the proposed new location and the impact this may have on tenants at the indoor market, I took the time to walk around with representatives from Aldi and talk to them about their plans if the store is approved.

“The final decision on the store will be made by Wychavon councillors but if it goes ahead, I am confident Aldi and the local economic development team will make sure stall-holders are well supported to find new locations if needed.

“The new Aldi should be a boost for local people and the local economy.”

Years of speculation over the future of the landmark came to an end in June when Aldi confirmed it had acquired the complex in the heart of the town.

The site was put up for sale in 2019 by owners, the Mackaness family, with a price tag of £5.4million.

Rumours it would be bull-dozed to make way for an Aldi were dismissed earlier this year but a sale has now been agreed.

Pershore Retail Market has been run by the Mackaness family, based in Northamptonshire, since 1967 and the family’s success has seen the market enjoy near full occupancy throughout.
