New group aims to give its support to hospital

VALE residents concerned over the future of Evesham’s Community Hopsital have been invited to become part of a new campaign group which has been set up to support the Waterside venue.

Evesham Hospital Supporters will hold its first meeting on Wednesday at Orto Lounge in Market Square from 7pm and organisers hope to welcome as many local residents as possible.

The hospital has been the source of debate in recent months with services such as the breast clinic being removed, leading to health campaigners protesting against the removal of services earlier this year.

Eye clinic services were axed last summer due to a lack of doctors to run the service safely, meaning patients now have to travel to Worcester or Tewkesbury for treatment.

Organisers have vowed a healthy debate will be held and will provide a lot of information about the hospital and the services it currently provides in a bid to win the support of Evesham residents.

Mary Campbell, one of the organisers of the event, said the intial response to the group had been super and praised town residents for their community spirit.

“Please come with all your ideas and stories and make this an evening to remember. Invite all your friends and family to support the amazingly well thought of Evesham Hospital,” she said.

“Lets get this off to a great start and make sure our hospital stays where it is and get the improvements it deserves.”

Health chiefs recently secured £90,000 to enable them to conduct a feasibility study which will look at improvements to the current building to the potential for a new community hospital to be built elsewhere in the local area.

The cash has been released as part of the national One Public Estate programme, a partnership between the Local Government Association (LGA) and the Cabinet Office Government Property Unit (GPU).
