A NEW café, bar and live music venue has officially opened its doors at the former PJ’s bar site.

The Valkyrie Bar, owned by Steve Richford and his partner Katrina Edwards, welcomed in customers for the first time last Saturday (January 14).

The bar has breathed new life into the venue which stood empty for some 12 years.

It was officially opened by the Chairman of Wychavon District Council, Coun Frances Smith, which also kicked off an evening off festivities to mark the occasion.

A Viking battle took place in the Market Square, with customers then treated to a host of live music.

Owner Steve Richford said: “We’re so pleased by the reaction we’ve had to the bar so far and we’re very excited about what we’re offering Evesham at our venue.

“We hope even more people will come out and see what’s on offer. They can also find out more about what’s coming up on our Facebook page.”

The opening of the bar marks another step in achieving the ambitions set out in the Evesham Town Plan which aims to regenerate the Market Place as a centre for cafés, bars and restaurants.

The Valkyrie won’t be the only new venue opening in Market Place this year, with Katie’s Bar & Grill opening in the spring, as well as a further planning application for another restaurant to open where ImaGine used to be.

Shawn Riley, Inward Investment Manager for Wychavon, said: “Steve has bought his experience of re-opening bars elsewhere to Evesham and has succeeded thanks to his hard work, determination and investment.

“We’re excited by what The Valkyrie Bar will offer as a cafe bar during the day with outdoor seating facing into the square, and their evening offering as a bar and music venue.

“This is a fantastic example of investment in the town and shows a growing confidence in Evesham.”
