EVESHAM’S MP Nigel Huddleston has left his ministerial post weeks after the Commonwealth Games as Prime Minister Liz Truss continues to make appointments to her Government.
The Mid Worcestershire MP will move to the whips office – responsible for party discipline – and leave the Department of Culture, Media and Sport which saw him take on responsibilities for sport, for tourism and for the Birmingham 2022 games.
Following his appointment in February 2020 – a month before lockdown was imposed – Mr Huddleston oversaw the challenges posed by the pandemic on professional sport and the return of fans to sporting venues across the country.
The recovery package for the UK’s tourism industry and cultural sites was also under his remit as the country emerged from the worst of the Covid crisis.
Mr Huddleston was also at the forefront of the Government’s ban on Russian and Belarussian sportsmen and women competing in the UK following Russia’s illegal invasion of neighbouring Ukraine.
Football’s fan-led review and the trial of safe standing areas at some of the country’s leading top-flight grounds were also fronted by the outgoing Sports Minister.
