MP backs campaign over ‘dangerous’ A46 junction

WEST Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has thrown her support behind a campaign to get highways chiefs to review the ‘dangerous’ A46 junction at Sedgeberrow.

Mrs Baldwin recently met representatives from Highways England after calls were made by concerned villagers to convert the B4078 junction into a roundabout.

As the Observer previously reported, campaigners launched a petition back in September due to safety concerns at the junction after numerous near-misses as a result of the build-up of traffic on the A46.

The petition has so far been signed nearly 200 times and has also galvanised support on social media after campaigners branded the junction a ‘major disaster waiting to happen.’

During the meeting, the West Worcestershire MP raised the campaigners’ concerns with Highways England in the hope they will include the junction in the blueprint for strategic road improvements which they are currently developing.

Mrs Baldwin said: “Sedgeberrow residents have contacted me and raised fears amongst the local community of how dangerous and slow it can be to join the A46 from the village.

“The road is dangerous and slow, and I was happy to add my support to this campaign, and reflect the villagers’ views at my meeting with Highways England.

“Highways England will be developing a long-term road improvement strategy and I hope that it will take local views into account when developing the plan.”

In response, a spokesperson for Highways England said: “We carried out work to improve safety along this section of the A46 two years ago, including providing better road markings and installing new central islands with bollards.

“We will continue to monitor safety along the route and take action if and when appropriate.

“We’d also encourage motorists to stick to the speed limit for their own and other people’s safety.”
