Mayor's Diary

Evesham Editorial 7th Jun, 2020   0

Mayor of Evesham, Coun Mark Goodge, writes for the Observer

IF THINGS had gone according to plan, I wouldn’t be writing this. My last column as Mayor should have been at the beginning of May, just before I handed over the chain to my successor.

But, as we all know, things haven’t gone according to plan, and we’ve postponed Mayor Making until we can do it properly.

We still don’t know when that will be, although I’m hopeful we can rearrange it some time towards the end of summer. Until then, you’re stuck with me, I’m afraid!

One of the things that I’ve been really proud of in Evesham is the way that people have pulled together to support their community during the coronavirus pandemic.

As soon as the lockdown was imposed, teams were set up to help deliver food and medicines to those unable to leave their homes.

Foodbanks and community larders have redoubled their efforts to ensure that nobody goes without essentials. And other people have been doing things like shopping for their friends and neighbours without necessarily getting involved in organised groups.

This week is Volunteers Week, where, nationally, we celebrate those who freely give their time and skills to help others. The voluntary sector has always been the bedrock of society, all the way from major international charities to grassroots clubs and groups.

Here in Evesham, volunteers organise events, pick litter, run youth clubs, raise money for charity, plant flowers, help the vulnerable, and more that is never seen in public. It’s an essential part of what makes this town what it is.

But over the past few months, as we learn to cope with the abnormal becoming the new normal, it’s become even more crucial.

So I’d like to pay tribute to everyone who is involved in voluntary work in our community, in any way and at any level.

At times like these, what you give is more valuable than ever. Thank you, and long may you continue.
