Marching to make point on plastic

Evesham Editorial 19th Feb, 2018   0

A PLASTIC procession made its way down Evesham High Street as campaigners sought to spread the message of cutting plastic use in the Vale by 50 per cent in 2018.

‘Get Drastic with Plastic’ campaigners were out and about last weekend to again draw attention to the campaign launched last month in the heart of Evesham.

They handed out stickers and leaflets with the message ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, or Reject’, the last meaning shoppers should refuse to take ‘one-use’ plastic wrapping which cannot be recycled.

Campaigners made a special stop outside Iceland to compliment the supermarket on being the first to make a specific commitment to end using ‘one-use’ plastic, although only on its own brand goods.

Many of the shops on Bridge Street and the High Street were visited and urged to share the aims of the campaign with staff and customers.

One of the group, Julie Tucker, said: “Although it was very cold it was well worth while to get our message out to the public.

“Many people are sympathetic but others don’t yet seem to realise how important this issue is for our streets, our rivers, our wildlife and ourselves. There are even tiny slivers of plastic in our drinking water’.
