Litter pick campaign has support of 300 residents

A VOLUNTEER litter picking scheme to help take on the litter louts has seen more than 300 residents and businesses sign up.

Council chiefs now hope more residents will sign up to their ‘Adopt a Street scheme ahead of The Great British September Clean which takes place from September 11 to 27. The national event, run by Keep Britain Tidy, replaces the usual Great British Spring Clean, which had to be postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Wychavon’s Adopt a Street scheme encourages residents, community groups, businesses, and other organisations to choose a section of street or public land and then pledge to litter pick it on a regular basis. In return, people are given their own dedicated litter picking kit to use and will receive regular updates on the scheme as well as Wychavon’s anti-litter campaign. There will also be opportunities to take part in community litter picks during the year.

Coun Emma Stokes, executive board member for Environment on Wychavon District Council, said: “We only launched the Adopt a Street scheme 16 months ago and the response from communities across Wychavon has been amazing. Together with our volunteer litter pickers we are helping to make our district a cleaner and tidier place to live.

“We’re still playing our part by spending about £1.5million on street cleaning as well as investing in our anti-litter campaign, which is focusing on taking targeted actions in certain areas, reviewing the provision of litter bins, behaviour change schemes and working with schools as well as enforcement action.”

Due to the coronavirus outbreak and the risk of spreading the virus, Wychavon will not be loaning out litter picking kit to community groups as they have done in previous years. People are instead encouraged to sign up for the Adopt a Street scheme.

Delivery can take up to three weeks so people are encouraged to join as soon as possible if they want to make sure their kit will arrive in time for The Great British September Clean.
