FOR THE first time in many years the floodlights at Pershore Abbey will be switched off – but just for an hour.
The lights will go out next Saturday (March 30) as part of Earth Hour, a worldwide event to call attention to the looming threat of climate change.
It has been organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature who call on owners of iconic buildings everywhere to turn the floodlights off. Everyone is asked to use as little energy as possible in their own homes for the hour, starting at 8.30pm.
“Our abbey is a real landmark every dark night,” said Rev Claire Lording.
“But we’re pleased to join with St Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey for this special one hour sign.”
The Pershore Abbey floodlighting uses low-energy LED lights and is funded entirely from donations.
Many nights of illumination are sponsored in memory of family members.
