A DROITWICH tennis centre has been crowned the best in the county by the national governing body of the sport.

Lido Park Tennis scooped two accolades at the recent Lawn Tennis Association Awards – coming out on top for both Park of the Year and the Connecting Communities Award.

The tennis centre has been commended for its facilities and the work it does in getting people active within the local community and further afield with its outreach programme.

The volunteer led group has been running fun based tennis sessions for over six years and regularly has 60-70 people a week taking part in the various groups they run, for all ages and abilities, including walking tennis for those who are less mobile.

The youngest player is just three years old and the oldest will be 88 in a few months time.

Over the last two years, the organisation has developed its comprehensive outreach programme, working with groups both locally and further afield, especially in disability tennis.

The outreach programme even supports those who living with brain injuries, Parkinson’s, autism, visual impairments and blindness alongside other physical or mental health challenges.

Neil Bates, lead volunteer of the group said “We are delighted to be presented with these awards which recognise the huge amount of work our volunteers and helpers put in to get people up and active.

“Everything we do is about having fun and not being too serious, a principle that seems to work with everyone who gets involved.”

The group will now proceed to the Regional Awards which will be announced in the next few weeks.
