MID-WORCESTERSHIRE Liberal Democrat candidate Margaret Rowley has called on voters to help her stop Brexit and tackle the big issues facing the United Kingdom such as the NHS and schools.

The Wychavon councillor was revealed this week as the parties candidate for the General Election on December 12 and launched her campaign with an attack on both Boris Johnson’s Conservative party and Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party who she said were determined to pursue Brexit.

Liberal Demorcrats have controversially vowed to revoke Article 50 should Jo Swinson’s party win a majority or pursue a second referendum leading to accusations from opponents the party is refusing to respect the result of the referendum in 2016.

“In this election, the Liberal Democrats are offering voters a real way to stop Brexit by electing a Liberal Democrat majority government which will revoke Article 50. Stopping Brexit means we can focus on tacking the big issues facing the UK right now and build a brighter future,” Mrs Rowley said.

“The Liberal Democrats will build a Britain where we can grow our economy, tackle the climate emergency, and address the crises in our NHS and schools.”

December’s poll will be the fifth General Election for Mrs Rowley who has fought the seat for the Liberal Democrats in each election since 2005.

She recorded the party’s best ever share of the vote in 2010 when she finished second behind former MP Sir Peter Luff with nearly 12,000 votes but in 2017 finished third with 3,450 votes as Conservative candidate Nigel Huddleston won the seat with a majority of 23,326.

Mrs Rowley has lived in Tibberton, near Droitwich, for 30 years and until recently worked for the NHS in Worcestershire.

She has been a Wychavon District councillor since 1995 and leader of the opposition since 1999. .

“I am delighted to be the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Mid-Worcestershire. We have more members than ever before and in June we beat both Labour and the Conservatives in a national election for the first time 100 years,” she added.
