Learn about one of the region's most historic battles at Pershore event

Evesham Editorial 23rd Apr, 2024   0

AN INSIGHT into one of the pivotal battles of English history is on the agenda at a special talk in Pershore.

Three of the most important and decisive battles in English history – Worcester (1651), Evesham (1265) and Tewkesbury (1471) were fought within a 20 mile radius of each other – and it is Tewkesbury which features as the latest in a series of talks at Pershore Heritage and History Society members.

Fresh from his popular talk last month on the stories behind the Battle of Worcester Paul Harding of Discover History, Worcester, returns to Pershore to explain how and why this battle occurred.

He’ll be highlighting both the campaign leading up to the Battle of Tewkesbury (fought on May 4, 1471) and the progress of the battle itself at the Conference Room, rear of Pershore Library, Church Street, Pershore.

The day for your diary is Thursday May 2 at 7pm. Admission for non members is just £3.

Tewkesbury was one of the defining battles of the Wars of the Roses when the Lancastrian army was defeated by Yorkist forces under the command of King Edward IV.

Edward IV was succeeded by his brother Richard III in 1483 – he of the Princes in the Tower fame – paving the way for 1485 and the triumph of Henry Tudor and the start of the Tudor dynasty.

Each year Tewkesbury holds a medieval festival highlighting the battle.

This year the event takes place over the weekend of July 13-14 from 11am to 6pm on the Saturday and 11am to 5pm on the Sunday.

The site is a five minute walk from the town centre and parking is £10 with entry free of charge.
