PUBLIC toilets in  the Wychavon District Council area are officially a lav-el above the rest after flushing away the competition at the a naional loo awards.

The conveniences won Best Local Authority Public Toilets in the UK for the fourth year in a row held last month at the National Motorcycle Museum at Solihull.

The loos at Droitwich’s Lido Park were named the Best Leisure Facility Public Toilet in England for the first time, while the prize for Best Car Park Public Toilets in the UK again went to Milestone Ground in Broadway.

Wychavon’s partnership with Hey Girls to provide free period products to help tackle period poverty was also recognised, with Viaduct Meadow in Evesham receiving the Period Dignity Award for England.

Glenn Furlong, Phil Childs, Coun Beverley Hardman and Tim Lewis, Wychavon’s head of client services.

Overall, this was Wychavon’s best set of results, with ten of the district’s toilet blocks receiving the top Diamond Award, including St Andrews toilets in Droitwich Spa, which were fully refurbished last year. Abbey Park toilets in Evesham received a Platinum Award.

Coun Beverley Hardman, executive board member for Environment, said: “We know our toilets are far from bog standard, but it’s wonderful to get this recognition from the Loo of the Year judges. I’m particularly pleased they recognised our work with Hey Girls to help tackle a serious issue like period poverty.

“A huge thanks goes to the cleaning team from our contractor Mitie, who work hard all year round to ensure our toilets are always looking their best.

“We’re proud that at a time when other councils are closing their public toilets or introducing charges, we’re not only keeping ours free to use but continuing to invest in them and drive standards even higher.”

The Loo of the Year Awards were founded in 1987 and recognise ‘away-from-home washrooms’ with the highest standards of cleanliness, accessibility and maintenance. Entrants must impress judges in more than 100 criteria to win the top awards.
