Lancaster flypast marks anniversary

A FLYPAST from a Lancaster Bomber from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight was the undoubted highlight of a memorial service to mark 75 years since the tragic crash of a Whitley Bomber close to Broadway Tower.

Fine weather ensured a record attendance of ex-service members, ex-service organisations and guests at the event on Saturday which was boosted by a contingent of Air Cadets from far and wide.

Guests gathered at Broadway Tower to commemorate 75 years since the bomber crashed into the hillside alongside the tower killing all five of the crew on board.

Jennifer Johnson, chairman of the Evesham Branch of the Royal Air Force Association opened the service by welcoming and thanking those who attended.

Eleven standards were on parade which was led by Roy Bates of Evesham who also voiced the Exhortation and the Kohima Epitaph.

Jo Williamson, Lay Minister of Broadway then led the service which saw 97-year-old Jeff Brereton, a veteran of the Battle of Britain and the Second World War, read the Royal Air Force Association dedication.

Following the playing of last post and reveille by Evesham’s Sue Sollis, a wreath was laid by Kathleen Peria.

Mrs Peria is a niece of one of the Canadian crew members who tragically died and travelled from the USA to attend the service with her brother and a further party of six fellow Canadians.
