Jane's London Marathon run for cardiovascular disease awareness

AN NHS worker from Peopleton, near Pershore, is putting her foot forward for next month’s London Marathon to help save lives by raising awareness of the impact cardiovascular disease can have on people when they approach their 40s.

Local stroke services lead Jane Gordjin will be braving the marathon on Sunday, April 21 to ensure people over 40 know how to access a free blood pressure check.

High blood pressure can cause a series of health conditions, such as strokes and heart attacks.

More than one in four adults in the UK have raised blood pressure, while up to 5.4million people over 18 haven’t been diagnosed. Many NHS community pharmacies across the county offer free blood pressure checks for anyone aged 40 and over.

Pharmacists can also refer to a person’s GP if their blood pressure is higher than normal and can offer advice on how to manage it.

Jane said she is always keen to promote keeping a healthy heart and to ensure people know how to check if they have high blood pressure.

She added: “It’s important to check your blood pressure and it only takes a few moments to do it free at a local pharmacy if you are over 40.

“Often a change in lifestyle or diet will be enough to bring your blood pressure down if it’s on the high side.

“If you are suffering from headaches, blurred vision, shortness of breath or even regular nosebleed, is could be a sign that your blood pressure is too high.

“You should seek medical advice if you are showing these signs.

“Getting your blood pressure tested is easy to do and could save your life.”
