JAILED: Six-year sentence for Evesham burglar

Evesham Editorial 10th Oct, 2023   0

AN EVESHAM man has been handed a six-year prison sentence following a burglary and attempted robbery in the town.

Daniel Gurney, 38, of Deacle Place, pleaded guilty on the day of his trial at Worcester Crown Court on October 4 to charges of burglary and fraud, attempted robbery, and breaching bail conditions.

Gurney was sentenced to 36 months for the burglary on February 26, 2023, to run consecutively with a 36-month term for the attempted robbery for which he was also ordered to pay a £226 victim surcharge.

He was further sentenced to 26 weeks for breaching bail conditions to run concurrently with the six-year term, plus a three-month term for each of three fraud offences, also to run concurrently.

PC Matt Tomkins of Worcester’s Reactive CID team said: “This was a good result for the team at court, putting a serious offender behind bars for a lengthy term.”

He added as we see the clocks go back soon and the darker evenings close in, there were many things that people could do to make their homes safer.

“The use of timers for lights, drawing curtains, leaving radios/ TVs on when not at home in an evening and of course ensuring doors and windows are locked and keys not left on view, we can all play our part in deterring would-be thieves,” said PC Tomkins.

“We also support the installation of simple home CCTV’s that can be viewed via phones and computers.

“I would ask you to be a good neighbour by sharing these simple tips and reach out to those who live near you to support them in taking these small steps.”
