NEW mums who miss out on the vital first few days of bonding with their new baby because of the need for further medical treatment are being given iPads as part of a ground-breaking scheme at the Worcestershire Royal.
Mums will be able to follow their baby’s progress via a live video link so they don’t miss on those precious first moments with their new-born child thanks to an idea by neonatal chiefs at the hospital.
Babies which suffer complications at birth or premature babies are often sent straight to a neonatal unit so they can receive specialist care, meaning new mums can often spends hours without being able to hold or bond with their newborn.
There are currently two iPad carts available within the department, funded by Herefordshire and Worcestershire Local Maternity and Neonatal System (LMNS). When a mum is unable to visit her baby a cart is taken to her bedside where she can watch them and talk with staff to receive important updates on their bundle’s progress.
Neonatal sister Sharon Ali, said: “This is a brilliant idea for those mums who may be separated from their baby.”
“The first mum to use the iPad was in tears when she could see her baby. It was very emotional; the staff were all overwhelmed with the reaction.”
“It is a privilege to see that bond developing and we are so grateful to receive the donation of the iPads from the LMNS,” she added.
