Investigation into death of man looks at assault link

INVESTIGATIONS are continuing into the death of a man in his 30s whose body was recovered from the River Avon following a painstaking search by emergency services.

West Mercia Police confirmed the day-long search last Wednesday (November 20) led to the discovery of the body at about 4.45pm.

The alarm was raised just before 7am when a passer-by saw the man enter the water by Evesham Rowing Club.

Police believe the man is linked to an assault at a property in Forest Gate earlier that morning which saw two women attacked.

Detective Insp Ed Slough said: “Both women were taken to hospital with serious injuries and continue to receive medical care.

“We are continuing with our investigation regarding the link between these two incidents and are not currently searching for anyone else in connection with the assault.”

Two fire engines and boats were at the scene on Waterside to assist police to tackle the search in the River Avon which peaked at four metres high during last week’s heavy rain.

One ambulance, two paramedics and the Trust’s Hazardous Area Response Team also attended the scene at the time.

Emergency services recovered the man from the water and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police confirmed an inquest into the man’s death would be heard by Worcestershire corner David Reid next year.
