WORCESTERSHIRE Interfaith Forum marked Mitzvah Day last Sunday by working together to serve free cakes and drinks at Redditch’s Alexandra Hospital.

Overall, 20 people from across the county of all ages and faiths travelled to help commemorate the day with cakes donated by Christians, Jews, Sikhs, Baha’is and Muslims.

The multi-faith group also gave away tea, coffee, cold drinks and biscuits to patients, visitors and Alex staff.

Mitzvah Day is a Jewish-led day of social action which encourages people across the world of all faiths and none to give up their time to make a difference in their communities.

In total, 40,000 volunteers across the world gave up their time to help others.

The volunteers were joined at the Alex by the Deputy Lieutenant of Worcestershire, Sir Nicholas Lechmere.

The event was organised for the forum by Yvonne Stollard.

She said: “This was a wonderful interfaith occasion demonstrating that people of different faiths can, and do, work together in harmony.

“We have come together to do this mitzvah for several years now, and we have all become good friends. It’s a wonderful way to serve the community.”

The forum’s chair, Rev Catherine Lack, added: “This event gives a powerful and wonderful message when people of different faiths are seen to be together, to work together, to laugh together.

“All our ‘customers’ were struck by how well we got on with each other and how well we worked together.”
