AN INSPIRATIONAL Pershore girl was among those recognised at the 2017 Young Good Citizen Awards for her work in helping the community.

Tara Gwynn-Newitt was one of 10 inspirational young people honoured at the awards organised by West Mercia Police.

The Pershore youngster was nominated to reward her for volunteering at the town’s Riverside Youth Centre.

The kind-hearted teenager shares her personal life challenges and difficulties with the youngsters at the youth centre in the hope of inspiring them to overcome their own problems.

Tara has also been a proactive worker within West Mercia’s outreach programme, preparing craft workshops for three Year seven classes at Abbey Park Middle School.

The 16-year-old has recently taken up another volunteer position within a disability inclusion project in the area.

West Mercia Police launched the search for Young Good Citizen of 2017 in May and individual and group nominations were received from Safer Neighbourhood Teams, schools, youth leaders and members of the public.

Tara and the other nine finalists, along with the person that nominated them, collected their awards and a £50 Amazon voucher at West Mercia Police’s HQ, Hindlip Hall, last week.

Presenting the awards Chief Insp James Baker said: “Every year, I am inspired to see the incredible lengths young people go to. They are a positive force; and that’s why I feel so passionate about this opportunity to recognise and reward them.

The ceremony is run in partnership with the West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner and the High Sheriffs’ of Shropshire, Worcestershire and Herefordshire, who presented awards to young people from their county.

Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion said: “These young people make such a valuable contribution to our communities, and it is important that we celebrate them.
