THE AVON at Pershore provided the perfect spot for messing about on the water last Saturday (July 19).

Despite inclement weather, thousands of visitors descended on the banks of the river to enjoy a variety of fun activities for the annual splash-tastic river festival.

Organised by Avon Navigation Trust in partnership with Pershore Riverside Centre the free event raised much-needed funds for the youth charity.

Water-based pursuits included paddleboarding, boat trips and a bell boat regatta organised by Andy Train of Fladbury.

Try-it sessions in canoes and kayaks were on offer courtesy of by Wychavon Kayak and Canoe Club.

On dry land there were a range of stands representing community groups including the Avonvale River Action Group who spoke to visitors about the work they are doing to monitor water quality.

“We shared details of our citizen science programmes – the Angling Trust water quality monitoring network and Surfers Against Sewage bacteria testing.

“It was a great opportunity to raise awareness of the issue of poor river health and to generate funds to continue our work,” said Louise Bugg.

There was also a craft fair, inflatable assault course for children and mad Sumo Wrestling.

Musical entertainment included 14 acts throughout the day including female vocal duo Jen and Reba and the North Cotswold Choir.

Youth manager Bradley Edmunds told the Observer it was the perfect weather and he was very relieved the rain held off for most of the event.

“It was a wonderful day that brought the community together and luckily everyone was able to enjoy themselves as normal.

“We are particularly grateful for the support of all the Pershore charity and volunteer groups.”

“Visitors and participants generously supported the traders and events. As in previous years, we hope to make a significant four figure contribution to the Pershore Riverside Centre charity,” added Michael Hodges.
