INVENTIONS from the past 70 years were celebrated as Pershore Carnival’s returned to the town after a two-year absence.

One of the highlights of the town’s calendar was forced off the streets because of the pandemic but was back with a bang on Bank Holiday Monday (May 3).

The 2022 incarnation was moved from its traditional late May Bank Holiday slot to avoid clashing with Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

But the parade and procession on the theme ‘1952 to 2022: Inventions of the Past 70 Years’ brought a familiar feel back to the streets of the town in the first carnival since 2019 because of Covid.

Clubs, groups and schools from across Pershore formed the procession with residents braving the slightly inclement weather to show their appreciation.

This year’s event raised money for Pershore and District Disabled Swimmers (PADDLERS) and the Pershore and Evesham Downs Syndrome Support Group (PEDDS).

A day of celebration and fun for all ages marked the culmination of another packed programme of activities which also included the traditional Easter Sunday Duck Race on the River Avon last month.

Up until this year Pershore Carnival has been held annually on Spring Bank Holiday Monday in its current form since 1968, although some claim such events began in Pershore during Victorian times

The carnival committee is made up of around a dozen volunteers who meet once a month throughout the year to discuss and plan the carnival and the other fund-raising events such as the ever-popular Duck Race.

Numerous local causes have benefited from funds raised during the carnival over the years and cheques will again be presented to the local causes later this year.
