Hundreds join in dementia week

Evesham Editorial 7th Jun, 2018   0

A PACKED week of events to mark Dementia Action Week saw hundreds of Evesham residents attend events to learn more about supporting those living with dementia and their families.

Evesham Dementia Action Alliance was delighted with the response the community showed for the week with the overwhelming highlight being the hugely successful ‘Knees Up Teas Up’ event at the Boathouse at the town’s Rowing Club last Wednesday.

About 70 people living with dementia and their carers danced and sang throughout the afternoon and enjoyed coffee, tea and cake, supplied by Evesham Older People’s Forum.

Volunteers and alliance members; Rooftop Housing, Tesco, All Saints Church, Alzheimer’s Society, Evesham Town Council, Cyclefest, the Older People’s Forum, Worcestershire County Council and the Rotary Club of Evesham all worked in partnership to make the day such a success.

An afternoon of music and songs saw positive feedback from all who attended which included the chance to meet new people and hear about other activities which are available.

A popular week came to a close at the Boathouse last Thursday when Mayor of Evesham Coun Mark Goodge honoured those involved with making the vital town lifeline a success with certificates.

Presentations were also made by a number of people including Blackminster Middle School headteacher Lorna Button, Lindsay Roach who is Community Champion at the town’s Tesco, Hein van der Steen from Evesham Rotary Club, Carolyn Pym – Memory Loss Advisor at Abbey Medical Practice and Jenny Johnson, the chair of Evesham Older People’s Forum.

Elsewhere in Evesham, Tesco staff, many of whom are Dementia Friends, made pledges to support people living with dementia.

Among the support on offer is the relaxed lane which is open seven days a week from 10am to 4pm for customers who would like or require more time and support through the Worcester Road store’s checkouts.
