THE FIRST of the new season of talks hosted by the Vale of Evesham History Society (VEHS) will focus on the Elizabethan era with guest speaker and novelist Justin Newland.
At the beginning of the Elizabethan era, England was an isolated, misty isle on the edge of continental Europe.
But sparked by Dr John Dee’s vision in his book The Limits of Empire, England grew to become the centre of a new world of trade and communication, bringing its laws, customs and language to all parts of the world.
Justin’s talk titled The Limits of Empire – How Drake’s Circumnavigation changed History on Thursday, September 25, will explain how this period of history inspired his latest novel, The Mark of the Salamander, which explores the epic story and secret history of Francis Drake’s circumnavigation of the world.
Justin is an author of a number of historical novels, often with a supernatural twist and regularly does book signings in high street stores and bookshops.
He is well known as a public speaker and gives talks around the country to historical associations as well as appearing on LitFest panels.
VEHS organises an annual season of talks and lectures that run from September to May and membership of the society is not necessary to attend.
It meets every last Thursday of the month (except December) at the Friends’ Meeting House in Cowl Street.
Talks cost £3 for members and £5 for non-members, including refreshments.
