Help bag a grant for wetland group

VOLUNTEERS from a Pershore nature reserve are calling on residents to vote for their wildlife project as part of a town store’s ‘Bags of Help’ scheme.

The Friends of Avon Meadows is hoping to bag a cash boost from the Tesco project, which is offering grants of up to £5,000 – in partnership with Groundwork – using the money saved from the Government’s 5p carrier bag charge.

The community wetland group would use the cash injection to buy more tools and equipment to help them with their activities, as well as to help with running events for families and improving volunteer skills in wildlife recording.

Shoppers will be able to vote for their favourite of three county projects throughout December, where they can cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out each time they shop.

Richard Stott, chairman of the Friends of Avon Meadows, said: “As a small community group, we rely on the generosity of the local community who support what we do to volunteer their time to lots of different activities.

“Through the Tesco’s Bags of Help scheme, we will be able to support them in return, with more tools, more equipment and greater access to training.

“We would also be able to share what we find so fascinating about Avon Meadows through wildlife-focused events, with the help and support of experts from Worcestershire Wildlife Trust and Worcestershire Recorders.”

Liz Etheridge, wildlife projects officer at Wychavon District Council, said: “In this season of goodwill, we wish the best of luck to all the projects nominated, knowing that each of them will make a big difference to their local environment and community.”
