WORLD Champion quadrathlete and Labour’s candidate for Mid Worcestershire got on her bike to raise awareness of her party’s bid to tackle climate change.
Helen Russell, who is also a member of the Evesham Wheelers and a supporter of Cycle Evesham Vale, has been riding through the constituency delivering leaflets and stopping to speak to residents about Labour’s environmental policies.
Among the polices the party hopes to introduce is a Climate and Environment Emergency Bill setting out in law robust, binding new standards for decarbonisation, nature recovery, environmental quality and habitats and species protection.
This includes ensuring almost all of our electricity and most of our heat comes from renewable and low carbon sources by 2030, building 72,000 car charging banks, a windfall tax on oil and energy companies and investing an extra £5.6 billion to improve the standard of flood defences
“In 2017, Wychavon had the highest amount of C02 emission per person in Worcestershire. Everyone in Evesham suffers from the pollution and inconvenience caused by traffic jams,” she said.
“Labour will increase investment in cycling, including 5,000 kilometers of cycle ways, safe cycle routes to primary schools with training for both children and parents, cycling programmes such as Bikeability, and grants for electric bikes.”
