MAJOR plans are being drawn up by health bosses which could see Evesham Community Hospital re-built or even moved to a new location in the town, the Observer can reveal.
For a number of years Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust has been looking at options for the Waterside hospital as they recognise the current building is ‘not ideal.’
As part of this, health bosses have joined together with other public sector organisations for the ‘One Public Estate’ project – and one of its main aims is to look at proposals for Evesham Community Hospital.
The scheme was launched by the Government in 2013 to encourage councils, health bodies and other public sector organisations to work together to ‘unlock’ land for new homes and commercial space.
As a result, a number of options are currently being developed by the project, although none has yet been finalised. But health bosses have confirmed the Waterside hospital could be redeveloped in its current location.
Other options being looked at include moving the hospital to a brand new site in the town.
The hospital has been dogged by constant rumours about its future for a number of years. These concerns resurfaced back in June when the hospital’s eye clinic services were axed.
Also that month health bosses were forced to insist the hospital was ‘not at risk of closure’ after a public meeting in Evesham discussed Worcestershire healthcare services.
The health trust now hopes that by confirming potential options it will end those rumours and reiterate its commitment to a community hospital in Evesham.
A trust spokesman said: “We have long-recognised that the environment at Evesham Community Hospital isn’t ideal and we have over the years looked into options to address this.
“Currently public sector partners across Worcestershire are working together on what’s called the ‘One Public Estate’ initiative and part of its remit is to look into the future options for the site.
“Any future developments would be to enhance the site and the environment whether that is on the current location or in a new local area, and as a Trust it is important to reiterate our commitment to providing a thriving and well-utilised community hospital in Evesham.”
