West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin writes for the Observer…

OVER the last few weeks, people have been getting out and about and thankfully enjoying some sunshine. One of the remarkable things that I have seen is how many pubs and restaurants have been able to invest in their venues to make them covid-safe but also improve their outdoor spaces.

It’s now down to us to show our support by going out a bit more and helping them to reap the benefits of their investment.

Shops are opening, people are returning to offices and I’ve been able to return to doing some face to face visits and meetings. Some of my work is still done over online conferencing systems but it is nice to get out again and talk to people in person.

This is all made possible by the continued success of the vaccination programme and younger people are now being called forward to get their first jab. Nearly 40 million people have had one jab and 24 million people have had both doses. I know people are so grateful for the work of the NHS, the county council and the army of volunteers who have been helping to make this possible and I join them saying a big thank you to each and every one of them.

Our roadmap out of lockdown is built around four steps and contingent on meeting four tests. We will hear about the final step out of lockdown in the coming weeks and I firmly believe that the Government should follow the data rather than dates to make these decisions. The key is to avoid overwhelming pressure on the NHS, not to prevent every case. It will be a balance, but I am confident that vaccines work – please play you part by getting vaccinated as soon as you can and together we will get our lives back to normal very soon.

In the meantime, with weather this warm, let’s enjoy the wonderful attractions of the staycation. Who needs the Med?
