West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin writes for the Observer….

OVER the last six months, I have met with a range of local people, businesses and campaign groups to hear their views on how we can act together to tackle climate change.

I’ve hosted meetings with green campaigners, major employers and Women’s Institutes to make sure that every voice is heard as I prepare a letter on behalf of the residents of West Worcestershire, to Alok Sharma, who is President of the COP 26 United Nations climate change conference which will be held in Glasgow later this month.

But the most compelling voices have been primary school pupils who are so passionate about their environment and nature.

I’ve held assemblies at schools all over West Worcestershire and listened to the strength of feeling about how they want COP 26 to be a springboard for global agreement and action. They want us to act on further reduction on single use plastics. They want us to do more to protect our green spaces to protect our wildlife. And importantly, they have pledged to encourage their parents to act – whether it is looking at the way they travel to and from school and work or how they heat their homes. And after all, it is right that these pupils are engaged in this issue because the primary school pupils of today will be in their thirties when we are delivering on the pledge to met net zero by 2050.

Nationally, we have a Ten Point Plan which will mobilise £12 billion of Government investment, and potentially three times as much from the private sector, to create and support up to 250,000 green jobs. We are reducing our reliance on carbon sources for our power and much more electricity is now generated through renewal sources. And locally I am encouraging home-owners to look at whether they can install green heating sources, look at electric car purchases and improve home insulation.

Action on the Environment remains one of my absolute priorities as we work towards being the first generation to leave our natural environment in a better state than we found it.
