Grit stocks replenished as cold bites

WORCESTERSHIRE’s grit bins have been fully refilled once again following the latest cold spell to hit the county.

The county council’s Highways team has been working to make sure that stocks in 1,350 yellow grit bins across the county are replenished, in preparation for the next wintery snap.

During the last heavy snowfall in December, around 3,000 tonnes of salt were spread on the roads in Worcestershire.

Cabinet member for Highways, Coun Alan Amos, has been out with the highways team to check out the grit bin refill efforts.

“Our winter services teams have done a fantastic job during the recent snowfall keeping the county moving and open for business,” he said.

“Keeping our grit bins refilled regularly means that we are prepared and the county can run as normally as possible during bad weather.”

The salt/grit mixture is for use on the roads and footpaths and can be used by members of the public when temperatures drop below zero Celsius to help drivers and pedestrians.

An interactive map, which allows users to search via postcode for their nearest grit bin can be found at www.worcestershire.gov.uk/gritting

To request a refill of a grit bin during the winter season log on to the County Council’s ‘Report It’ system at www.worcestershire.gov.uk/reportit
