A BIG clean up of Evesham saw 25 bags of rubbish removed from the town’s streets, pathways and lay-bys in just two hours as part of a national campaign to clamp down on waste.
Members of Evesham Town Plan’s Anti-Litter Group took part in the ‘The Great Plastic Pick Up’ and were joined by three new members before splitting into groups to target several of the local grot spots.
These included Battleton Brook, the alleys off Port Street and the Badsey Lane lay-by on the A46 bypass, all of which have been targeted before due to high levels of rubbish.
During the pick, the group collected an excessive number of empty beer cans littering the steps at Badsey Lane, where it plans to reduce further littering by implementing a notice with new litter bin. A new grot spot was also located on the path from Port Street to Fairwater Close, joining the group’s list of target places.
Coun Gerry O’Donnell, member of the Town Plan Anti-Litter Group said: “I’m so pleased with the progress the Evesham Town Plan Anti-Litter Group has made since they first formed in November 2016.
“In just over 18 months, we’ve collected over 200 bags of rubbish, and a growing number of members of the public willing to give their spare time to caring for their town.”
Launched by The Daily Mail in an effort to combat the increasing amount of waste, The Great Plastic Pick Up aims to encourage the public to pick up litter in their hometowns.
While the group didn’t spend the day focusing solely on plastic, they were keen to get involved in the wider approach to tackle the UK’s growing litter problem.
