Gras makes the trip to Leicester

Evesham Editorial 5th May, 2015 Updated: 20th Oct, 2016   0

THIS year’s annual Asparagus Run saw a fleet of classic cars and ‘famous names’ head to Leicester.

Visitors from the Vale and further afield flocked to The Fleece Inn in Bretforton last Thursday (April 23) as the festival began in style with Evesham’s famous vegetable taking centre stage on St George’s Day.

And following a morning of events, classic cars carrying civic dignitaries and the likes of St George, Gus The Asparagus Man and, for the first time, Simon de Montfort took to the road for a trip to the East Midlands.

This year is the 750th anniversary of the Battle of Evesham at which Simon de Montfort (the 6th Earl of Leicester) was killed whilst trying to defend democracy.

So in his honour, this year’s Asparagus Run headed to Leicester where they also celebrate his earldom and have several buildings named in his honour.

The newly-harvested asparagus spears were escorted by vintage and Morgan Cars to Leicester and be the focus of their St George’s Day celebration feast that evening
