Go deeper to explore Evesham's archaeological history

Evesham Editorial 25th May, 2024   0

AN EVENT unearthing the archaeological wonders of historical sites near Evesham is coming to town.

The event celebrates the award-winning Roots in Time project which delved into Worcestershire’s rich heritage to uncover fascinating artifacts and previously undiscovered locations at New Farm Nature Reserve just north of Evesham.

Roots in Time was funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England.

The storytelling event, dubbed Go Deeper: Tales of the Past, will take place from 2pm to 3.30pm on May 28 at The Valley, Evesham.

At the event, Midlands based storyteller and performance artist, Ian Craigan will explore characters and themes inspired by the 2022 Roots in Time community excavations.

Nina O’Hare, community project officer, said: “New Farm Nature Reserve, which is just a short walk from The Valley, contains lots of fascinating Roman archaeology.

“The community dig in 2022 showed that this was a Roman farmstead and uncovered a series of fascinating artifacts.

“This event is a chance to immerse yourself in the lives of the people who may have made, used, and thrown away these objects – we will never know their names, but we can imagine and wonder at who they were, and the stories they’d tell.”

The event is designed for adults, but young people in Year 7 and upwards (ages 11 to 12+) are welcome to attend if accompanied by an adult.

Following the event’s conclusion at 3:30 PM, attendees can make their own way back to The Valley, allowing time to explore the trails and soak in the serene landscape.

The round trip is approximately 2 miles along footpaths and former farm tracks.

Councillor Karen May, cabinet member for communities at Worcestershire County Council, added: “Join our archive and archaeology team to appreciate the incredible stories hidden beneath our feet and highlight the importance of preserving our local heritage for future generations.

“It’s a unique opportunity to connect with our past in a meaningful and engaging way.”

This event is free, but booking is required to secure your place. Visit https://www.explorethepast.co.uk/events/ for more information.
