YOUNGSTERS at the Vale of Evesham School have been boosted with the unveiling of a new £25,000 sensory classroom thanks to a caring town business.

Evesham-based powder handling experts Matcon have been supporting the school since 2016 and provided the five-figure sum towards the installation of a new sensory room.

The ultra-modern classroom has been designed to stimulate visual and interactive learning and includes a magic carpet, interactive whiteboard, bubble tube, light up water table, cloud curtain and a range of wooden and low-tech toys.

Teacher Laura Wainwright said: “Having the new sensory room has had a significant impact on the learning and engagement of our children with complex needs.

“It has made learning more accessible for a wide range of pupils particularly now we have overhead tracking.

“Staff can use it with ease due to the high spec equipment. The children achieve targets in a range of ways that they were unable to do before.

“Children engage more with the activities and it can be accessed by a small group of children rather than individuals.

“The children are more motivated to learn and show shear enjoyment and excitement when they are in the room. The sensory room was an unusable space previously but now thanks to the generosity of Matcon our sensory room has been transformed,” she added.

Matcon is owned by IDEX Corporation in the USA and the funding was secured from the IDEX Foundation whose mission is to create value and positively impact the communities in which their employees live and work.

Matcon’s managing director Stephen Ball handed over the cheque to Mrs Wainwright and said: “We are pleased to have been able to help The Vale of Evesham School improve their Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems.

“The new room offers greater expressive communication opportunities to non-verbal youngsters and will in turn make a real difference to the pupils, parents and teachers of the Vale of Evesham School.”
