A REMEMBRANCE evening will take place for Evesham sailor Josh Gayton who tragically died in Scotland.
There will be a gathering in the Market Square in Evesham, next Sunday, May 5, starting at 7.30pm.
A two-minute silence in Josh’s memory will be held at 9pm (2100 hours as Josh was 21).
And there will be blue ribbons and candles to be sold in the evening to help raise additional funds to go to supporting Josh’s family.
People who go along are being urged to wear blue in memory of Josh to help ‘light up the town blue’.
A fund-raising page set up to support Josh’s family has now generated more than £12,000.
Josh Gayton, 21, was found dead in Scotland on Sunday, April 21 after failing to report for duty at the Faslane naval base.
Scottish police launched an appeal to find Mr Gayton after he went missing following a night out.
Police Scotland confirmed to the Observer that a body recovered from the water off Helensburgh on Sunday had been formally identified as Mr Gayton.
Ch Insp Allan Dickson said: “Our thoughts remain with Josh’s family at what is a very difficult time for them and they have asked for privacy.
“We would like to thank everyone who responded to our appeal and to partner agencies who helped search for Josh after he was reported missing, including assistance from the Royal Navy, the Royal Marines and Ministry of Defence Police.”
The fundraiser was launched by Jayne Buggin to help raise funds for Mr Gayton’s mother, Katie and his sister.
At the time we went to press, the fund had comfortably beaten its £2,500 target by reaching £12,156.
Jayne said: “My thoughts are with Katie and her family.”
Since the fundraiser was set up donations has been flooding in.
Helen Mindham, who donated said: “I didn’t know Josh but can’t imagine the grief his family must be going through, rest peacefully Josh.”
Tracey Clarke, who also donated said:
“From a Navy Mum. I’m so desperately sorry for your loss, words seem inadequate. I wish there was more we could do.”
