Fund-raisers bag the highest amount in local Relay for Life history

HARD-WORKING staff at an Evesham supermarket have proved ‘every little helps’ after they raised the highest total of any team in the 13-year history of the town’s Relay for Life.

Fund-raisers at Tesco on Worcester Road have taken the wraps off this year’s drive to raise cash for Cancer Research UK with the news the store raised a staggering £13,332.90 of last year’s £51,115.69 Relay for Life total in the town.

A charity collection was held over the weekend to kick off the 2020 fund-raising drive alongside more information about this year’s Relay for Life which will take place on July 18 and 19.

Lindsay Roach, Tesco’s Community Champion, said: “Please come and support and find out more from the teams already registered and further details of this great event and how you can be part of it.

“Team Tesco would like to thank all our staff, families and customers for their support and contribution towards the grand total.

“Unfortunately, everyone knows of someone with cancer and Evesham Relay for Life are determined to be part of the solution. Cancer doesn’t sleep and neither do we for one night in July,” she added.

A number of fund-raisers are on the menu during the build up to this summer’s event including bingo, golf days, walks and fun nights out and anything else organisers come up with to raise awareness and money for research.

Last year’s event saw Team Tesco go with the theme of Peter Pan and had great fun dressing up and preparing a pirate ship for their stand on the relay weekend in July.

“We raised money all year from skittles nights to raffles and collections in store as well as selling second-hand books, badges and bangles,” Lindsay added.

Paul Baylis, volunteer event chair of Relay For Life Evesham, said: “We are now entering our 13th year. To date this small market town has produced what can only be described as a truly amazing total for Cancer Research UK.

“Thanks to the hard work of the community this town has been able to hand over £813,127.19 for life saving research.

“For those that have never heard of us, Relay For Life brings our community together to beat cancer. Teams of family and friends fundraise in the lead up to the Relay, then join other teams from the local area to celebrate their fund-raising at this overnight community event.
