MORRIS dancing, traditional folk music and famous names will be on the menu for part of the official launch for this year’s British Asparagus Festival.
The first-ever official National Asparagus Day, marking the start of the Asparagus season, will be launched on Monday with the first-cut round of gras being celebrated and revered.
As well as being blessed, morris dancers will be on hand to welcome the famous asparagus which has been recognised by the European Union by being awarded geographical protected food status.
Joining the crowds on Monday will be Gus the Asparagus Man, Jemima Packington, the world’s only fortune teller who uses asparagus to ply her trade, and the AsparaFairy.
The ‘100’ round of asparagus will then be regally driven by a fleet of vintage cars to the newly-opened Broadway Station where it will be taken by steam train to Cheltenham Racecourse Station where it will be auctioned to raise money for Cotswold Riding for The Disabled.
