Free parking for NHS staff to end on Friday, Sajid Javid announces

FREE parking for NHS staff introduced during the pandemic will be scrapped on Friday (April 1), the Health Secretary has confirmed.

Sajid Javid confirmed the lifeline to those on the frontline in the fight against Covid would end but added many NHS trusts have chosen to implement free parking for those in ‘greatest need’. This includes front line staff who are working night shifts.

Free parking for NHS staff was introduced on March 25 2020, two days after Prime Minister Boris Johnson imposed the first national lockdown.

Local councils also followed suit as the Government said NHS and social care staff should be able to carry out their vital work without worrying about paying for car parking.

In a written statement last night, Mr Javid said: “Free parking in hospital car parks for NHS staff introduced during the pandemic will also come to an end on March 31.

“However, over 93 per cent of NHS trusts that charge for car parking have implemented free parking for those in greatest need, including NHS staff working overnight.”

“On behalf of the Government, I would like to record my thanks to everyone who has worked tirelessly to keep people safe over the last two years and whose efforts have enabled us to move to the next stage of the Covid-19 response.”
