WYCHAVON councillors joined with countries around the world by holding a special ceremony to mark Commonwealth Day.
The Commonwealth Flag was hoisted at Wychavon District Council’s Civic Centre in Pershore on Monday (March 9) one of more than 1m000 Commonwealth flags that were raised in Commonwealth countries around the world.
A specially written speech was read out at the ceremony by Coun Frances Smith, chairman of Wychavon District Council, before the flag was then raised.
The day aims to inspire people to connect with others from across the Commonwealth and to celebrate the organisations values of friendship and cooperation.
“I am pleased once again we are supporting Commonwealth Day by raising the Commonwealth flag,” Coun Smith said.
“This day is an opportunity to promote the peace, democracy and equality that the flag represents and to strengthen the connection between Wychavon and the Commonwealth communities.”
