Fix the loose drain cover 'before it kills someone'- Evesham man's plea

A FURIOUS Evesham man has called on Severn Trent to secure a loose drain cover on a Vale road after it was blamed for three car accidents.

Dale Campion posted a plea on the water supplier’s Facebook page on Monday (November 21) after a third car crashed into a ditch due to the heavy rain forcing up the drain cover on Childswickham Road, near to the junction with the A46.

It follows similar incidents which saw a Volkswagen Golf flip on its roof after the cover lodged itself under the car.

Mr Campion, who works at a farm 100 yards away from the scene, believes the drain is not able to cope with a large amount of water, and as cars drive in the middle of the road to avoid flooding at the sides, the water pressure is leading to the cover lifting up.

Following the earlier incidents Severn Trent did replace the cover, however Mr Campion wants them to do more to fix the issue following the third crash.

In his post to Severn Trent, he said: “For the third time this year your drain cover has come up in the rain and taken another car off the road- another elderly driver.

“After the last time we spoke, I was assured this issue was going to be resolved, yet all you did was replace the cover again. Are you waiting until you kill someone before you fix the issue.

“I think three times this year is enough for them to sort the issue and not just replace the cover,” he told the Observer

In response, a Severn Trent spokesman said: “We were made aware of flooding from a drain cover in Childswickham Road during the heavy rain in the area on Monday (21 November). This was caused by a blockage in the sewer which has now been cleared.

“We’re working on making the manhole covers in the road safe for the short term and are also looking into options that can improve the situation in the future.”
