Five-year plan boosts future of Evesham's historic Almonry Museum

A MAJOR five year document which sets out the future of Evesham’s historic Almonry Museum has been given the green light by council chiefs.

The museum’s forward plan for 2017 until 2022, was approved by councillors on Evesham Town Council on Monday night.

One of the top priorities for the historic building is to secure funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to support repairs to the Grade I listed building and to help rejuvenate the museum’s exhibits.

Last year Historic England placed the 14th century building on the ‘at risk’ register after fears were raised about the building’s structural instability.

The five year vision sets out ambitions for the museum to continue to be involved in the town’s festivals and to develop more projects with local community groups.

Museum bosses also want to develop more resources for schools and to strike up new relationships with schools to help develop new learning sessions for the town’s youngsters.

At the meeting councillors also gave the green light to the museum’s Collections Development Policy for 2017 until 2022.

Included in the document are plans to expand the museum’s collection by adding items and pieces which represent and reflect the changing communities which have influenced Evesham and the Vale from the mid-20th century to the present day.

The Almonry’s manager, Ashleigh Jayes, said: “We really are at a great crossroads and I think there are an awful lot of opportunities and since we put this together I think our opportunities have really broadened.

“There are a lot more things we can achieve and a lot more things that we can do. The future is bright, the future is Almonry.”
