Fires in the vale during heatwave prompt warning

AFTER a prolonged period of dry, hot weather Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) crews have been busy attending to various fires in the Vale district.

On Saturday, June 28 a crew from Evesham Fire Station was called at 20.52pm to a fire in the open in Abbey park, Waterside, Evesham.

Two unsupervised barbecues were extinguished using buckets of water and the incident was marked as pending closure at 21.39pm.

On Monday, June 30 a crew from Evesham was called 4.41pm to another fire in the open in Evesham Road, Harvington.

A bonfire, which had spread to three metres of grassland and hedgerow was extinguished by fire service personnel using one hose reel jet. The area was dampened down and advice given to the landowner. There were no casualties and the incident was dealt with in 30 minutes.

A fire at a building in Littleworth Street, Evesham was attended by two crews from Evesham who were called at 3.07am on Monday, July 1.

Forcible entry was gained to the property before the fire was fought for two hours by two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and using a hose reel jet.

The area was checked using a thermal imaging camera for hot spots but none were found. There were no casualties and no other emergency services were required. The incident was marked as pending closure at 5.03am.

Meanwhile an open fire in King Georges Way, Pershore on Monday, June 30 was attended by a HWFRS crew from Pershore Fire Station called at 10.58pm.

A composite bench was well alight and extinguished using one extended hose reel and the incident was marked as pending closure at 11.42pm.

Last month HWFRS asked the public to avoid using open fires in the countryside, extinguish cigarettes properly and refrain from using disposable barbecues, as the current dry spell means that fires can get out of hand very quickly.
