Fire service reminds people in Worcestershire to stay safe

Evesham Editorial 26th Dec, 2020   0

HEREFORD and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) is reminding people that fire safety always needs to be high on their Christmas lists.

The extra distractions at Christmas make it especially important to be vigilant.

Between December 24 and January 1, 2020 there were over 120 incidents in Herefordshire and Worcestershire and more than 30 of those were fires.

Half of the fires were classed as ‘accidental’, including 14 accidental dwelling fires in which cooking was the most common cause.

The kitchen was the most common place for fires to occur.

Risk Manager at HWFRS, Emma Roberts, said: “Christmas is a time for festive cheer with family.

“But fairy lights, candles and decorations mean it is also a time to take extra care to keep our loved ones safe from fire.

“Make sure you place candles in suitable holders and away from curtains, never leave cooking unattended and, of course, test your smoke alarms.”
