Fire chiefs urge homeowners to 'clear the clutter'

Evesham Editorial 14th May, 2019   0

FIRE CHIEFS have reminded residents in Evesham and Pershore to clear the clutter which may be blocking escape routes and to ensure everyone knows how to get out, stay out, and call 999 in the event of a fire.

While smoke alarms are regularly the heroes in a fire, Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) said a blocked exit, locked door or unfamiliar surroundings can often shave vital seconds from escape times, exposing victims to the fatal dangers of toxic smoke.

Homeowners are asked to fit a smoke alarm on every level of their home and test them weekly, prepare and practice a plan of action to act quickly in the event of a fire, keep their escape route clear to ensure a speedy exit and make sure everyone knows where the door and window keys are kept.

Group Commander Mick Cadman said: “Every second counts when escaping a fire. Having working smoke alarms and knowing the escape plan in an emergency could make all the difference’.

“If you have dependants or someone less able to care for, it could take more time to get out. Make sure you’re always prepared, your exits are clear and everyone knows what to do if the worst should happen.”
