Fire chiefs in caravan hob warning after Eckington explosion

Evesham Editorial 23rd Jun, 2023   0

FIRE and rescue chiefs in Worcestershire have alerted leisure caravan and mobile home owners in the two counties to be aware of a product safety report.

The Government’s Office for Product Safety and Standards has issued a serious risk notice for gas supply elbow joints used with Belling and Stoves Gas Hobs installed in holiday homes and caravans manufactured after May 2019.

Fire investigator, Station Commander James Holder, said the fault is believed to have contributed to an explosion in Eckington near Pershore in April involving a holiday caravan.

A fire investigation determined the cause was a gas leak which led to a small fire and a man being airlifted to hospital with burns.

The product safety report summary reads: “Hazard: The connecting elbow joint from the gas hob to the gas supply to the property may fracture.

“This can cause gas to leak through the fracture and presents a serious risk of fire.

“Corrective action: Belling have initiated a modification programme for products in scope of the safety issue.

“Owners must isolate the gas supply to the hob or caravan/holiday home immediately and contact Belling to arrange a modification.”
