Figures show rise in non UK residents

THE NUMBER of people born outside the UK living in Wychavon has increased since 2016, new figures show.

Figures released this week from the Office for National Statistics show the non-UK born population of the district, covering Evesham, Pershore and neighbouring Droitwich was estimated at 9,000 last year out of 124,000 residents.

However in 2016 the figure landed at 6,000 migrants recorded, meaning a 3,000 leap in two years of non-UK born residents in the district.

Meanwhile in Redditch, the number of people born outside the UK living in Redditch has dropped sharply since the EU referendum in 2016.

The ONS says the non-UK born population of the town was estimated at 4,000 last year out of 85,000 residents.

This is down from a peak of 13,000 in 2016.

The latest figures for Redditch show that one in 20 residents, or 4.7 per cent of the population, are not UK born residents.

Figures also show 616 new migrants have registered for a GP in Redditch between mid 2017 to mid 2018.

The number is a fall of more than 100 on the previous year when 719 migrants, who were previously living overseas, signed up with a town doctor.

Neighbouring Bromsgrove’s figures show non-UK born residents has increased by 2,000 from its 4,000 figure in 2016 to 6,000.

This is out of a 2018 population of 95,000 – its highest level going back as far as 2009.

The statistics also show that Worcester’s migrant population has stayed the same at 10,000 non-UK born residents between 2016 and 2018.

Jay Lindop from the ONS said: “Long-term international migration continues to add to the UK population, as an estimated 226,000 more people moved to the UK with an intention to stay 12 months or more than left in the year ending March 2019.

In the year ending March 2019, 612,000 people moved to the UK – immigration – and 385,000 people left the UK – emigration.

“EU immigration has continued to fall since 2016 and is at its lowest level since 2013.”
