Extra cycling lanes and cycle proficiency in four-point plan

Ross Crawford 12th Jul, 2020

A FOUR point plan to promote cycling and eco-friendly transport across the county is to be put forward by Worcestershire’s Labour councillors.

Party leader at County Hall, Coun Robin Lunn (Redditch North) said they were calling for an expansion of the cycling proficiency scheme, greater use and expansion of cycle lanes, more electric charging points, and the creation of a safer environment for cyclists.

He wants to see the proposals taken up by County Hall’s overview and scrutiny board to gain all-party support.

“The country is changing, people are finding new ways to get about and this is something that needs to be encouraged,” said Coun Lunn.

“For example back in 1990s people couldn’t see beyond coal as a major power source, now it supplies what, five per cent to zero of our energy because renewables have come on so much.”

The proposals needn’t cost a fortune either, he said, although with the government offering £250million to encourage cycling, Worcestershire should be making full use of the money available.

“You need to get more people proficient in cycling. As an adult you may not have been on a bike for many years and giving people the skill and confidence to get back on the road is vital,” said Coun Lunn.

“We need to promote the use of cycle lanes – and stop motorists from parking in them.

“Cycle lanes need to be expanded and widened and this should be explored more than it has been.

“We also need more electric charging points for cars to encourage the switch away from fossil fuels.

“And finally we have to think of safety, and this links to the introduction of 20mph zones in residential areas.

To encourage more cycling the environment in which to do so has to be much safer.

“These are a range of different proposals that would not cost a fortune to do yet could have wide ranging benefits as our towns transform.”

The proposals go before full council at County Hall on Thursday, July 16.
