OLDER people at a care home in Pershore got up close and personal with some exotic creatures thanks to a visit from a mobile zoo.

Senior citizens living at Heathlands Residential Care Home got to meet a variety of unusual critters thanks to an animal therapy session provided by Worcester-based Animal Mania.

Cuddling with chinchillas and stroking snakes were the order of the day, much to the enjoyment of residents, who were keen to participate in the activity designed to bring some cheer to the cold winter months.

The chinchilla won hearts across the home including Alison Thornton who declared it her favourite. “It was gorgeous, and its fur was so soft,” she exclaimed.

This was preceded by a Caribbean-theme day, where residents experienced the sights, sounds and flavours of Trinidad and Tobago courtesy of the staff.

The home’s catering team prepared several authentic dishes, including jerk chicken, rice and peas, which were all enthusiastically devoured.

Meanwhile, adding to the tropical atmosphere were colourful cocktails, live entertainment and even a ukulele band, helping the day feel like a real holiday by the sea.

Activities co-ordinator Paula Arrow said that the day had been hugely successful and so much fun.

“The residents and staff had a great time, ending with a live singer for our cruise ship cabaret, where the residents danced and sipped prosecco,” she said.

The day was made even more special by a milestone celebration, with Alison marking her 101st birthday.

Heathlands Residential Care Home is run by Sanctuary Care, a not-for-profit care home provider.
