A LEGEND of grassroots footballing governance from Evesham has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) in the recent Kings Birthday Honours list.

Evesham & District Pensioners’ Association (EDPA) vice-chair, Mervyn Leggett, was bestowed the honour for his services to association football over the last five decades.

Mervyn has given over 50 years’ service to grassroots football and has completed 32 years’s service on The Football Association Council.

During this time he has served on the FA Board, chaired the National Game Board, was a founder member of the FA Women’s Football Board and is a Trustee of the FA Benevolent Fund.

His administrative involvement in football began at local club level in 1966. He was a founding member of the Evesham & District Sunday Football League in 1970, serving as the League Secretary from 1979 to 1992.

Mervyn has also served on the Worcestershire Football Association Council for 41 years and was honorary and then company secretary for 20 years, becoming the Associations first full-time employee in 2001.

In addition to his current role with the EDPA, he is also proud to serve as president of both the Evesham & District Sunday Football League and the Evesham Referees Association.

Mervyn is a valued member of the EDPA and supports everyone within the group as well as hosting the Men’s Forum which meets monthly for a get together and lunch.

They are also known to go on outings to Cosworth or Guide Dogs for the Blind centre with more arranged.

FA Chair Debbie Hewitt MBE said: “It’s great to see so many footballing greats receiving honours.

“For Mervyn, who has served on our board and council, it’s the culmination of over 50 years of service to the grassroots game.”
