Evesham woman left 'shaken' after firework ordeal

A TERRIFIED woman has spoken of how she was left ‘shaken’ after she witnessed ‘idiots’ ‘setting of firework rockets’ across an Evesham road – with one only just missing her car.

The eyewitness, who does not want to be named, was waiting to turn left from Waterside onto Workman Bridge at about 5.20pm last Thursday when she first saw a firework go off under the bridge.

She then made her away across the bridge, which was busy with pedestrians on both sides of the road at the time of the incident, when she witnessed a flash and saw a firework rocket resting on the bridge wall.

“Within seconds of noticing it, it then shot right across the road in front of my car causing me to perform an emergency stop and narrowly missing a man walking towards the town centre,” she told the Observer.

“From the split second I saw the lit rocket resting on the wall and realising what was happening I did an emergency stop. I stopped so quickly dislodging contents on the passenger seat onto the car floor as the firework flew across in front of me.

“I don’t know how the pedestrian walking to my right missed being hit. He initially stopped and then carried on walking. He didn’t even glance around to assess what just happened which I thought odd, as I tried to take in everything behind and around me.

“I moved off and stopped as soon as safe to do so to call the Police.

West Mercia Police have confirmed officers were called out to deal with a report of anti-social behaviour. But when officers arrived at the scene the culprits involved had fled the area.

“I was really shaken and my thoughts instantly went to what could have happened if the firework had hit my car and of course anyone could have been injured,” she added.

The police’s investigation is ongoing, but anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to call police on 101, quoting incident number 565S of Wednesday, November 8.
